A enigmática Grace Jones teve um tremendo impacto na cultura pop entre os anos 1970 e 1980. Porém, ainda hoje, se mantém muitas vezes por entender.
De modelo, a artista de música e actriz, Jones era (e é) um ícone da moda, que quebrou estereótipos e esticou barreiras na arte feminina.
O seu tema “Private Life” foi inicialmente escrito por Chrissie Hynde dos Pretenders, que a escreveu para o álbum de estreia do grupo.
No mesmo ano, Jones gravou a sua versão, que entrou no álbum “Warm Leatherette”. O álbum fez parte de uma mudança na sua carreira, e introduziu-a a novos géneros, como o reggae, rock, e new wave.
Em “Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions”, Hynde disse: “When I first heard Grace’s version I thought ‘Now that’s how it’s supposed to sound!’ In fact it was one of the high points of my career – what with Sly and Robbie being the masters, and Grace Jones with her scorching delivery.”
A compositora e cantora “queria fazer reggae”. Na versão de Jones, Sly Dunbar e Robbie Shakespeare foram os maestros por trás do sucesso.
Em 2008, Dunbar disse: “It came from Peter (Tosh) at that time, and we were doing gigs with the Stones and with Santana, so we used to sit and listen. This is when we start opening the snare to get more ‘crack’ on the back beat and more ‘choof’ with the foot drum.”
Jones continua a ser um ícone no mundo das artes, agora com 75 anos. A sua persona continua a evoluir, na música e na moda.
