O cantor de reggae e dancehall Tony Tuff, famoso pelos temas “Girl I’ve Got To Get You” e “Come Fe Mash It”, morreu no dia 20 de Abril. Tinha 69 anos.
A sua morte foi confirmada num breve comunicado, publicado na sua página de Facebook oficial nessa tarde.
“It is with sadness and deep regret that we announce the passing of Reggae Legend Tony Tuff. Tony, whose real name is Winston Morris, made a name for himself in Dancehall during its early stages”, lê-se na publicação.
Não foi revelada a causa da morte mas, num comunicado diferente, a sua filha, Keina Sykes, prestou homenagem ao pai, escrevendo: “His legacy in music will always be remembered, and his presence will be deeply missed. Your thoughts, prayers, and support during this difficult time would mean a lot to me and our family. Please keep us in your thoughts as we navigate through this period of grief and loss. Thank you for your understanding and love.”
Tuff, cujo nome de nascença era Winston Anthony Morris, começou a sua carreira musical em 1969, como membro dos The African Brothers, juntamente com Lincoln “Sugar” Minott e Derrick “Bubbles” Howard.
Quando os African Brothers se separaram, em meados da década de 1970, Howard passou a ser produtor de Minott e Tuff, que continuaram com carreiras a solo.
O maior hit de Tony Tuff foi, indiscutivelmente, “Girl I’ve Got To Get You”, lançado em 1990. Foi gravado por cima do riddim “A Love I Can Feel”, do Studio One, e tornou-se um hino.
Outras músicas populares de Tuff são “Love Light Shining”, “Deliver Me”, “Sticky Wicket”, e “Next Door Neighbour”.
